Elm Centre opened its doors in 2011, having taken less than five years to complete one of the largest affordable housing projects in Ontario. The first building of its kind to offer three green roofs, geothermal heating and cooling, Elm Centre provides affordable and subsidized housing for women and their families right downtown. It is an innovative, mixed-use building that merges heritage restoration with new construction of 300 units of supportive and affordable housing for women and their families, including 50 units for Indigenous women and their families, and 85 units for women with mental health or concurrent mental health and substance use needs. The building also includes a 200 seat lecture hall, a restaurant, and head offices for YWCA Toronto and YWCA Canada.
YWCA Toronto has elected to use a Concierge staffing model to create a welcoming and supportive reception for tenants and guests. The team is part of a collaborative approach aimed at supporting the community with skilled responses that acknowledge the effects of trauma, mental health and oppression.
The YWCA Toronto team is keen to share their successes and their learning with you. You will also hear about some of their challenges along the way, including financing and fundraising challenges, considering that they successfully accomplished a $15 million fundraising campaign, despite being told by the “experts” that they wouldn’t raise more than $1 million.
